Sher Bahadur Deuba,70, has been elected as Nepal’s Prime Minister for the fourth time. He was the only candidate who contested in the election as the main opposition party UML decided to end the obstruction of parliament and did not register its candidates for the election. Deuba managed to secure 388 votes in the 593 strong Parliament in order to prove his majority. Deuba has served as Nepal’s prime minister for three terms from 1995 to 1997, from 2001 to 2002, and from 2004 to 2005. In 2005, during his third term he was sacked by the then King Gyanendra Shah in 2005 over his failure to hold elections and bring Maoist rebels to negotiations.

- The Indian Railways has introduced ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ service for passengersto make payment for tickets booked online within a window of 15 days.

- Mumbai based fintech firm ePayLater has joined hands with IRCTC for adding the new feature to Indian Railways ticket booking services.

- Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed a new technology which will change the way biofuel is manufactured.
- The ‘soil-to-soil’ manufacturing technology will make the process cheaper, quicker and pollution-free.
- It will make use of natural resources to extract gaseous and liquid biofuel and then converts the wastes into bio fertilizer.
- The project is funded by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

1. ADB and PNB sign $100 million loan.
- Asian Development Bank and Punjab National Bank has signed a $100 million loan which will be guaranteed by the Government of India.
- The loan will be used to finance large solar rooftop systems on industrial and commercial buildings throughout India.
- This is the first tranche loan of the $500 million multi tranche finance facility Solar Rooftop Investment Program (SRIP) approved by ADB in 2016.
- This will contribute to the climate change goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 11 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over the typical 25-year lifetime of rooftop solar systems.

- India and Russia have signed agreement on setting up two more units of a nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
- The reactors will be built by Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Russia’s Atomstroyexport.
- It will cost about Rs 50,000 crore, half of it being funded by Russia as loan.
- The two countries also decided to hold the first tri-Services exercises, named ‘Indra-2017,’ this year.

- India successfully test-fired it’s indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha.

- It a surface-to-surface medium range ballistic missile and has a strike range of 350 km.
- It is a joint initiative of Defence Research and Development Organisation and Bharat Dynamics Limited.

- Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Minister of Food Processing Industries inaugurated first Mega Food Park in the state of Odisha.
- This is the 7th Mega Food Park operationalized in the last 3 years by the government.
- Government of India has provided a financial assistance of Rs. 50 Crore to the project.
- The Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 25-30 food processing units in the park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually.

- US president Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
- Trump said that the Paris agreement gives undue advantage to India and China, the world’s leading polluters.
- 195 countries have signed this agreement. By pulling out of the deal US will join Syria and Nicaragua as nations who are not part of the deal.
- Paris Climate Accord is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that deals with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.
- The objective of this agreement is to limit the global average temperature to below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels.
