It is centrally administered territory at present continues to be common capital of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh was declared a Union Territory in 1966. On the north and west it is bound by Punjab, and on the east and south by Haryana. It lies in the foothills of Shivalik hills and is popularly called the City Beautiful. It represents modern architecture and town planning, and is the creation of French architect Le Corbusier.

Chandigarh is mostly urban area. In a small cultivable land wheat, maize, vegetales and fodder are grown.

It has large, medium and small scale industrial units producing variety of goods like hosiery and knitting machine needles, wooltops, electric meters, antibiotics and soft drinks, cables, wire products, soap & chemicals etc.

The places of tourist interest are several gardens and parks, Sukhna lake, museums and art galleries etc.
